Spamming – why do webmasters do it?

by rowena on Sep.18, 2009, under Uncategorized

You get them in your inbox and now you get them in your blog. Spamming is a very annoying tool used by webmasters to establish links to their websites, and more often than not they do it badly.

As a blog, we regularly receive comments from visitors that are completely spam which is why we thought that we’d talk about spamming today.

The worst ones you’ll spot really easily. For a start they are completely random and have nothing to do with your post. These are the easy ones to spot which you can automatically unapprove and remove from your site. However the more subtle of webmasters amongst you will know that the easiest way to get your comments approved is to maintain the theme of the post you are commenting on, and letting your link at the end do the work for you.

Asking a question or striking up a conversation is possibly one of the simplest of ways of getting your own site linked to and noticed. The interest is recipocated.

Now I am not meaning to go off in a rant. The fact you are getting spammed is a testament that your website is easy to find on Google, meaning you are getting ranked… yay!

What I want to talk to you about today is implementing spam features onto your blog that will help stop spam from getting through. It might not stop all of them, but it make work easier for you.

The one we use is Akismet and can easily be found on Wordpress. This spam filter prevents comments from going straight to your blog, instead giving you the time to read and approve them. It is still a bit lengthy but the programme is worth it and will save your site from becoming covered in spam.

Anyways I hope this helps.

Let me know if you need anymore help.
