What is an RSS feed?

Commonly known as “Really Simple Syndication”, all RSS feeds are is a family of web feed formats that enable you to frequently publish new pieces of work.
For example, blog entries such as the 1 I am writing now, news headlines, videos… essentially any need content you want to send/add to your website.
Now to get this right you need to consider it as a document. One that includes full or summarized text, plus metadata they will enable you to display publishing dates and authorship.
How can this benefit me?Look hard enough and you will find RSS feeds everywhere. Why? Because these web feeds allow you to syndicate content automatically. Meaning your blog or website is constantly ripe with content that surfers are looking for.
Now one of the best things about web feeds is that surfers will subscribe to them in order to receive updates. So work this right and you could create a following of subscribers who want to subscribe to timely updates and receive aggregate feeds from a number of differnt sites all in one place.
How does the subscription work?
Using a standardized XML file the user subscribes to your feed by entering into the feed’s URL or alternatively by clicking on the RSS icon which can be found in your browser. Once done, the RSS reader checks the user’s subscribed feeds regularly for new work; downloads any updates that it finds, and then provides a user interface that can monitor and read the feeds.
Simple? Well it is slightly more complicated than that, but as you can clearly see RSS feeds are highly beneficial for a website, and should definitely be included if you are establishing a blog.
Give it a go.

Pretty much – many on blogs using news feeds, but you can find them on mainstream websites too. Next time you look at a website, check to see if they published news stories. If they do, then you’ll definitely find an RSS feed. Michael
