Optimising your copy

by rowena on May.29, 2009, under copy

There are a number of ways you can boost the efficiency of your copy, but the best ways I have learnt involve a combo of techniques, all of which I now explain:

  1. Use Bullets – they may be a classic but they are still an effective way to show your surfer a multitude of benfits all in quick succession (such as I am doing now lol).
  2. Bolding – by identifying keywords or pieces of critical text within your copy you can help your surfers to spot your benefits, even when they are scan down the page.
  3. Hyperlinks – it is important to be careful with your colour choices here. Making your hyperlinks blue has been proven to be the most productive way to grab your surfers attention. Plus blue, underlined words are widely known across the web to be hyperlinks.
  4. Sub-headlines – not only do these prevent your copy from becoming bulky, but they are a clever way to help your surfers to scan down to the most relevants sections of your copy. Just be careful to use your sub-headers properly and ensure they accurately surmise the following content.
  5. White Space – this phrase you are probably unfamiliar with, but it does matter. All it is is the spacing you put between paragraphs of copy. By breaking your paragraphs up, this will make it easier for your surfers to find information and make your copy look less intimidating.
  6. Jargon – the biggest killer of copy is filling it with too many technical words. Why? Because not all your surfers will understand what they mean, thus inhibiting them from taking the next step. If you really need to contain technical words, give your surfers the option of reading a glossary or FAQ page.
